The launch of the original Eee PC is a distant memory today and so much has changed since the introduction of Asus' canny little sub-notebook. A lot of this change is down to the fact that the usage models have grown well beyond their intended market.

Originally, the netbook was supposed to be a low-cost device for schools and the poorer parts of the world - it was designed to connect the next billion people to the Internet. While I am sure that will happen over time, the netbook has become something of a fashion statement in the developed world.

ELSPA claims BBFC downgraded 22 adult-rated games

In a report released by the ELSPA, the company claims that the BBFC downgraded 22 adult titles that were given an 18 rating by PEGI. This follows recent criticism targetted at the BBFC for being too harsh with games ratings.

"The BBFC's downgrading of games opens up the potential of unnecessary risk for UK children and teenagers when playing games against other non-UK players online," ELSPA said.

"Last year, of the 50 games that PEGI rated 18+ and passed to the BBFC for classificiation, the film rating board downgraded 22 of them - almost 50 percent.

An entry $12 monthly plan gives users 30 downloads per month, or about 40 cents per song.

Computer labour

The effectiveness of a new computer program designed to help minimise human error in the management of women in labour is to be assessed in a clinical trial led by Oxford University.

The £5.9m trial has been commissioned by the National institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) programme.

In use, the program analyses the foetal heart rate and compares this to other information it collects about the labour, such as cervical dilation and the presence of amniotic fluid.

Oil from water

US engineers at Purdue University have created a new type of membrane that separates oil from water.

The amphiphilic membrane consists of a layer of polyethylene glycol tipped with a Teflon-like functional group made with fluorine.

Water molecules are attracted to the polyethylene glycol, yet pass through the Teflon-like layer, which acts as a barrier to the oil molecules.

Researchers attached the material to a glass filter, commonly used in laboratory research, to test out its effectiveness.

Biodegradeable plastic

Acompany in Australia claims to have developed a compound that can make almost any kind of plastic compostable and biodegradable.

The additive, from Goody Environment, can give plastic a controlled shelf-life from six months to five years and is claimed to be compatible with all plastic types, aside from PVC, which the company says it chose not to work with because of the dangerous hydrochloric acid it produces as it degrades.

According to the company, the Goody additive has been rigorously and independently tested.

AMD Phenom II to reach 4GHz on air cooling

AMD Phenom II to reach 4GHz on air coolingAMD's mainstream Phenom II processors should rekindle the competition with Intel for clock speed, according to a collection of reports of an AMD demonstration session. Based on the recently unveiled Shanghai architecture being used for new Opterons, the quad-core desktop chips should make a modest leap to 3GHz in official clock speeds but will have room for overclocking previously only available with Intel's Core 2 chips. An example tested by AMD is capable of running reliably at 4GHz with fan-based cooling and shows the company could upgrade the clock speed to match or beat Intel if necessary.

AMD's 45nm CPUs are designed to overclock

In a ravenously positive post on Theo Valich's blog, formerly of Inquirer and TGDaily fame, he claims that AMD has worked specifically with extreme overclockers for the first time in years to achieve a 45nm design that is claimed to work flawlessly from -200C to +100C!

AMD has tweaked the on-die sensor to not lock the part when below zero and AMD techies have apparently worked around cold bugs in the new K10.5 architecture.

Activision admits Bike Hero is viral marketing

No doubt in last few days many of you will have marvelled over the awesome "amateur video" recently posted onto Youtube of a film maker playing Guitar Hero with a bike. The footage is fantastically well choreographed, with the rider cycling over the familiar guitar hero note patterns painted onto the ground in with correspondingly flashing LEDs fitted to the handlebars that are perfect time to the music.

While the level of skill required to create the general awesomeness of the video had many cry foul of viral marketing, others were willing to give the makers the benefit of the doubt simply because it was cool. Although it’s now been revealed by MTV (makers of competing plastic instrument-athon Rock Band) that the whole thing is indeed a PR stunt by Activision, makers of the Guitar Hero franchise.

It's not often that a 22-inch TN+Film monitor comes along and piques my interest because they're generally incredibly samey and uninspired. It was to such an extent that the sigh I'd let off every time I read through the spec sheets for the latest 22-inch monitor to hit the market was getting longer.

And it was starting to become a distraction in the office – so much so that I started reading spec sheets when I was at home.

First Look: DFI LANParty UT X58 T3eH8

Availability: December (or "when the BIOS is ready").

We've seen Asus, MSI, Gigabyte and even ECS, and even though Core i7 is released today we've got the next latest and greatest from a firm forum favourite (say that five times fast) - DFI.

I warn you now, you might want to keep your "OMFGWTFBBQSAUCE" hat to hand if you're a DFI fanboy, and not just because it has those three letters stamped on the PCB.

First off, the box: it's pretty damn super sized is what it is, but that's mostly to package the motherboard safely and keep it from damage. Actually the MSI and Asus boxes are pretty similar to this, since they also have some meaty heatsinks like the DFI features. You may be curious about the name, and quite honestly we are too - the T3eH8 correlates to the DDR3 (T3) with eH8 which refers to the eight phase "server grade" digital PWMs.

MSI's Master Overclocking Arena 2008

Manufacturer:MSI

Overclocking is becoming an increasingly big business in the computer hardware industry in the same way that gaming is and has been for the last twelve to eighteen months.

Motherboard manufacturers starting to release products specifically designed to break world records and overclockers are even getting involved in the development of some of the 'gaming' motherboards as well. The reason for this is that if there is one group of individuals in the industry that really pushes hardware to the

Lian Li Silent Force 850W PSU

Manufacturer:Lian Li
UK Price (as reviewed): TBA
US Price (as reviewed): $210.00 (ex. Tax) - MSRP

Lian Li is famed for its critically acclaimed aluminium cases, but how well does it design power supplies? One doesn't necessarily afford excellence in the other field, but Lian Li claims its power designs are as good as its cases.

The Silent Force is not to be confused with the Maxima Force series - the Maximas are non-modular and have the option of a blue LED fan, whereas the Silent Force concentrates on doing what it says on the tin: silence. Clearly an over-used word by over-zealous marketing teams "silence" is objective at best.

Antec Skeleton

Manufacturer:Antec

Over the years the Antec brand has become synonymous with high quality chassis and has included some of our all time favourite cases, not least the Antec P182 which is still our recommended high end case almost two years since it was first released!

Until recently though, very few genuinely new chassis designs have emerged from Antec, and we’d grown concerned there was some serious resting upon laurels taking place. It’s always easy to relax when you’re on top, at least until your competitor comes up with an awesome new product that is – just ask Nvidia about the dangers of underestimating your opponent.

Overclocking Intel's Core i7 920

Manufacturer:Intel

We've seen how the "Core" performance lies, but what about stretching the value of a new i7 920 purchase that much more? With an RRP of $284 it’s not exactly a Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 territory bargain, but it's the cheapest of the new Core i7 CPUs by a large margin.

What potential does $284 buy you though? The Q6600s clocked to between 3.0 and 3.6GHz usually, although inevitably there are some people out there with some serious skills having eked out over 4GHz.

NZXT Whisper

Manufacturer:NZXT
UK Price (as reviewed):£94.94 (inc. VAT)
US Price (as reviewed):$144.99 (ex. Tax)

Despite having been around for close to five years in the USA, NZXT isn’t quite as well known here in Europe and while it’s making inroads into market with full system retailers, it hasn’t had the level of enthusiast exposure as more recognised brands like Cooler Master or Antec.

This looks set to change though, with the company releasing a very respectable number of new chassis this year - the latest is the NZXT Whisper Classic and that's what we're looking at today. Billed as an ultra low noise chassis which doesn’t compromise on features, let’s take a look to see if NZXT has what it takes to compete with the big boys in the ever competitive market for enthusiast chassis.

Nintendo: DSi likely for US by summerNintendo today set expectations for the launch of the DSi in the US that suggest a summer or earlier release for the new take on the game console. Company president Satoru Iwata notes that individual regions have their own discretion as to when they release the dual-screen system but that a launch in fall would "probably be too late," steering any potential release outside of Japan towards the middle of the year.

We've had an in-depth look at the architecture behind Intel's Nehalem processors already and so the question I'm sure you want to know is how all of that translates into real world performance. Well, look no further, as we've taken the three Intel Core i7 processors and put them up against the best of the previous generation - quad and dual core from Intel, as well as AMD's top three quad cores with the intention of finding out exactly where they fit into the landscape.

This happened when Intel first talked about Nehalem in some detail (as opposed to just announcing the name) - that was about six months before Penryn, Intel's first 45nm processor, made its way onto the market.
